Corns are defined as small, but bothersome, patches of thickened skin, which can quietly disrupt our daily stride. These localized areas of pressure and friction often develop on the feet, particularly over areas that constantly rub against footwear. They are the skin's natural response to protect itself from irritation. However, when left untreated, corns can cause pain and discomfort. Prevention is the key to keeping corns at bay. Choosing shoes that fit well with ample toe room and cushioning can minimize friction. Regularly moisturizing the feet can help to keep skin supple and less prone to developing corns. Wearing orthotic inserts can help to provide proper arch support in addition to distributing pressure evenly. It is beneficial to recognize the importance of preventing corns on the feet, ensuring that each step remains comfortable and pain-free. If you have problematic corns on your feet, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist for effective relief options.

Corns can make walking very painful and should be treated immediately. If you have questions regarding your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists of Toe-tal Family Footcare Associates. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Corns: What Are They? And How Do You Get Rid of Them?
Corns are thickened areas on the skin that can become painful. They are caused by excessive pressure and friction on the skin. Corns press into the deeper layers of the skin and are usually round in shape.

Ways to Prevent Corns
There are many ways to get rid of painful corns such as:

  • Wearing properly fitting shoes that have been measured by a professional
  • Wearing shoes that are not sharply pointed or have high heels
  • Wearing only shoes that offer support

Treating Corns

Although most corns slowly disappear when the friction or pressure stops, this isn’t always the case. Consult with your podiatrist to determine the best treatment option for your case of corns.

Foot pain, a common and often underestimated concern, can happen for different reasons, each demanding attention for effective relief. Overuse and strain can result from prolonged standing or excessive physical activity, leading to discomfort and inflammation. Ill fitting footwear is also a common reason to have foot pain, and wearing shoes that are unsupportive can stress the feet's delicate structures. Conditions such as plantar fasciitis, characterized by heel pain, stem from inflammation of the foot's thick tissue band. Arthritis can also trigger foot pain as a result of  joint inflammation. Addressing foot pain requires appropriate measures to be taken, including rest, gentle stretches, and the use of orthotic insoles. In more severe cases, medical consultation from a podiatrist may be essential for diagnosis and personalized treatment. If you have foot pain, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can effectively determine what the cause is, and offer correct treatment methods.

A plantar fibroma is a benign and non-cancerous growth that forms on the thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot known as the plantar fascia. These fibromas typically develop slowly and are often painless, but they can cause discomfort or pain when pressure is applied. The exact cause of plantar fibromas is not fully understood, but they are thought to be related to genetic factors or trauma to the foot. Treatment for plantar fibromas depends on their size and the level of discomfort they cause. Non-surgical options such as orthotics, or corticosteroid injections may help to alleviate symptoms. However, in more severe cases, surgical removal of the fibroma may be necessary to relieve pain and restore foot function. Early diagnosis and intervention are essential to effectively manage plantar fibromas and prevent complications. If you have a growth on the bottom of your foot, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can diagnose a plantar fibroma, and offer treatment options that are correct for you.

A plantar fibroma may disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Toe-tal Family Footcare Associates. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Plantar Fibroma

A plantar fibroma is a fibrous knot in the arch of the foot. It is embedded in the plantar fascia which is a band of tissue that extends from the heel to the toes along the bottom of the foot. There can be multiple plantar fibromas in the feet at the same time. There are no known causes for this condition. If you have a plantar fibroma, there will be a bump in the arch of your foot that cannot be missed. Any associated pain is most often due to a shoe rubbing against the nodule. Non-surgical options, such as steroid injections, physical therapy, and orthotics should be tried first. Surgery is a last resort and is the only thing that will remove a plantar fibroma entirely. Consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and to determine the treatment regimen that is right for you.

What Causes a Plantar Fibroma?

While there are no specific causes identified, a plantar fibroma can possibly come from genetic predisposition or the formation of scar tissue that forms from healing the tears in the plantar fascia.

What Are the Symptoms of a Plantar Fibroma?

There will be a noticeable lump in the arch of the foot that may or may not cause pain. If pain is felt, it is typically because a shoe is rubbing up against the lump or when walking or standing barefoot.

Treatment and Prevention

A plantar fibroma will not disappear without treatment, but it can get smaller and be a non-issue. If pain persists, a podiatrist examines the foot and when the arch of the foot is pressed, pain can be felt down to the toes. An MRI or biopsy might be performed to help diagnose or evaluate the plantar fibroma. The following non-surgical options are generally enough to reduce the size and pain of these nodules:

  • Steroid injections
  • Orthotics
  • Physical therapy to help apply anti-inflammatory creams on the bump

Surgery is considered if the mass increases in size and the patient continues to feel pain after non-surgical methods are tried.

Stretching plays a vital role in maintaining healthy feet and overall well-being. It offers numerous benefits, such as improved flexibility, better circulation, reduced risk of injury, and less pain. By incorporating a few minutes of stretching into your daily routine, you can experience these advantages. Morning stretches can be instinctive, where your body subconsciously stretches to modify tension in the feet, surrounding muscles, organs, and blood vessels. Sitting or standing for extended periods can lead to muscle tightness and discomfort. Incorporating stretching breaks can help ease tension in the neck, back, hips, legs, and feet. Stretching before bedtime can promote relaxation and improved sleep quality. If you would like more information about specific stretches that will help your feet, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist who can provide this type of information.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with one of our podiatrists from Toe-tal Family Footcare Associates. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous one, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising and ice and rest the foot. It is advised to then see a podiatrist for help.

Many people experience some kind of foot, toe, heel, or ankle pain for which they may require medical assistance. A podiatrist is a foot doctor who is educated and trained to examine, diagnose, and treat such problems as plantar fasciitis, bunions, gout, and sports-related injuries. This type of doctor can also help with issues that persist or worsen, including ingrown toenails, corns and calluses, athlete’s foot, blisters, and cracked heels. A podiatrist is specially trained to help patients deal with foot problems caused by diabetes, such as peripheral neuropathy and peripheral artery disease. These conditions can lead to serious problems, such as foot ulcers, and regular checkups with a podiatrist are essential. Podiatrists also help patients with biomechanical foot problems, such as overpronation and flat feet, by providing custom orthotic devices that fit precisely to the shape of the foot. In addition, they can deal with ankle sprains, stress fractures, and broken bones. A podiatrist is also able to give guidance on the right type of shoes to wear to address the foot problems you may be experiencing. If you need help with any foot-related issue, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

If you are experiencing pain in the feet or ankles, don’t join the stubborn majority refusing treatment. Feel free to contact one of our podiatrists from Toe-tal Family Footcare Associates. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Podiatrist?

Someone would seek the care of a podiatrist if they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems, etc.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Drugs
  • Orthotic inserts or soles
  • Surgery on lower extremity fractures

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.
